What were the biggest mistakes the writers made?

I never liked Arturo, even before he did the nasty with Nikki. I can't even put my finger on why I didn't like him. I didn't like his hair, that much I know, but that's not reason enough. Just his whole essence rubbed me the wrong way. I was getting used to the actor before he left though. But the affair with Nikki and him cheating with Mia were both gross. No doubt the writers wrote the cheating with Mia as the way to get him off the show.

Victor and Nikki's great love is such a joke. I still can't get the scene on the beach out of my head - the one where she's groveling and he's telling her he wishes she were dead. How did they EVER get back together after that? He was horrible to her.

Given enough time, I can "get over" almost any drastic change in a character's character. For example, Kevin. He was what appeared to be unredeemable when he raped Lily and locked Colleen (?) in a freezer and set wherever it was on fire. But they pulled it off. Kevin became one of my favorite characters. Well, favorite actors. He has mostly been a bad guy, but I liked him best when he was trying to be decent. Chipmunk head was a really bad writing mistake as well... but again, I got past that and liked him again. Apparently, when he comes back on, he's playing a bad guy again. Who can blame him though? I imagine he still can't get over Adam running over Deliah.

Actually, Adam running over Deliah was a bad writing mistake IMO. The writers had SO many opportunities to change that. They still could, if they tried. Just find one other piece of evidence that it WASN'T Adam after all. Kelly's mother played by Meredith Baxter was a good candidate... she was blonde, which fits a witness's account, AND she was an alcoholic.

I think most of the writing mistakes are the times they turn a character into a bad guy/girl, and write themselves into a corner and have no choice but to kill the character afterwords. Kelly wasn't that great of a character, so I don't really care so much what they did to her. But Ricky, Joe and Avery were good characters. At least Avery's not dead - she could come back. Her character wasn't totally ruined.

There have been so many changes to the writing team over the years. You can see that some of them try hard to undo the damage done by the previous team.

If that's the case, it sounds like we're going to have a higher than usual number of bad characters!
