I really thought Chance was the Police Chief now, and not a beat cop? All these women are worried about the day to day dangers he faces, but as chief, his job would be less dangerous, I would think, than if he was a regular cop. Which doesn't explain why he was out doing a regular cop's work the night he was shot. In my town, the chief is the one who makes big decisions, and talks to the public when things happen.

You would think so, but without Paul or Ray, he was probably the only employee left. They'll have to put a Gone Fishin' sign on the GCPD door.

It was explained like this, I think. The robbery happened and the criminal got away. Chance went to the scene, I guess, to look at the crime scene and investigate. In the mean time, the criminal left something at the crime scene and went back to retrieve it. That's when the criminal pulled the gun and Chance got shot.

Wow I don't know how I missed that whole explanation. I wonder if I have missed episodes.
I don't know why they even bothered to make Chance chief of police, just to turn around and leave the force. He could have still been a street cop with the exact same outcome.

I know, it's so dumb! Just a few weeks ago, Chance specifically told Sharon what a big adjustment it would be to sit behind a desk instead of going out in the field. And yet now they're acting like his job is as dangerous as ever, and he has to quit. All anyone does on this show is change jobs every month. There's no point to it.
