I quite liked this episode. It's so different from how the episodes are these days. While I don't like the very dark sets, I do like how pretty much all the dialogue is tense and nuanced, and fairly slow paced.
I thought it was from the 80s because of all the big hair, but I googled and it's 1993. All the women's hairstyles are big and hilarious. Tracey looked really good though... by today's dress/hair/makeup standards, Tracey looked a TON better than Lauren. Tracy looked very professional and well dressed. Tracey is generally a pretty sweet and kind person but I love her rubbing it in Lauren's face a little that Tracey is a successful author.
Victoria looked so young LOL. Was she actually married to Ryan in this episode? If Cole Howard, who was mentioned to be in his 20s, isn't quite on the scene yet, and certainly not with Victoria... I guess that means Victoria was with Ryan currently, but later was with Cole (who fathered baby Eve), but that Ryan and Victoria were back together when Eve died. I don't remember details from this time. Just that heartbreaking scene with Victoria and Ryan when Eve died.
It was nice to see the Colonel again LOL.
I guess this episode was specifically picked because of Cole coming back on the show, to give us a bit of a refresher on the background... Margaret Mason, who played Eve Howard, died in 1999. Wow that's only 6 years after this flashback episode aired. She was 58 and died of a heart attack.

Oh wow, I had no idea that MM died 6 years after this scene. I thought the same thing about the hair and also Tracey. She was so pretty! Sweet and sharp also. The thing that surprised me was how forward Nina was back then. What a little hussy :-). I had no recollection of this, I always thought she was a goody two shoes.
Victoria really did look young and I loved how sweet she and Ryan were with each other. What was the whole thing about Victoria's sexual issues - did I imagine this? I don't remember this at all. The whole style of writing just seemed so much better than what we're currently getting.
I'm glad they brought back this particular episode to give us some forgotten back story on the players.

Victoria was frigid. That's why Ryan became interested in Nina, who also stole her best friend Christine's boyfriend Philip Chancellor and along came Chance.

Thanks Deirdra! How do I not remember this? Was there ever an explanation for this (her frigidity?) Funny how I blocked out Nina's boyfriend stealing ways. She always seems so wholesome to me.

I had forgotten about Victoria's frigidity too. She seems to have recovered though, phew!
I had forgotten about Nina's boyfriend stealing ways too. But really, on soaps, who DOESN'T steal someone's boyfriend or husband?

I loved this episode. It reminded me of why I got into the show to begin with. The rhythm and pacing are so great, and there is so much unspoken, so much room for us viewers to feel. Every line is full of anticipation and tension, something to come, something of emotion. Every scene is based in emotion. It's night and day from how the show is today.

Regarding the part about Eve claiming Cole is Victor's son, I don't remember what happens with that, but clearly, Cole turned out not to be Victor's.

I remember that after Eve was dead, Cole and Victoria got together and I think were even engaged, and Victor found out and told her they were brother and sister. She ran away, and he and the colonel dug up Eve's body and did a paternity test somehow and found out he was not the father. The part I remember best was Victor hiring an airplane to fly a banner in the sky to get Victoria to come back home.

I love what miravep said about how the show used to be about emotion. The viewer is drawn in and feels things along with the characters. The way the writing is now, the only emotion I experience is disdain or impatience. It really feels like AI is trying to write the episodes. I can't follow all this business stiff, nor do I care.

Part of how Y&R showed emotion was with background music composed specifically for Y&R. They have and occasionally still use several different tunes for different situations, like sad memories, Cassie dying, grave-side scenes, and tempo changes between scenes. But these vintage episodes had a lot more music than they have now. Tricia Cast's first husband was Jack Allocco (m. 1989–2000), the composer for Y&R & B&B.
I had a cat who watched Y&R with me from her cat tree and she'd look at me with different faces & ear positions depending on which music played. She was most dramatic with scary music, like foretelling someone walking up to overhear key information or rumours. She seemed to understand the emotion being played just like I did.
Cole looks like that character from Clockwork Orange who had retractors holding his eyes wide open.

I enjoyed this episode so much! Everyone was so young. Traci was beautiful. So was Nina. Lauren still had her chipmunk cheeks! It was nice seeing Heather Tom. I also enjoyed the music.

Y&R still does use original music... I follow a man on instagram who does the promotional photos for the show, and through him I got the link to a composer of some of the original music. I can't remember his name or his IG or website now. But I remember looking at his website with the names of the music, looking for any clues to what was going to happen, because the names of the short pieces of music were related to the mood, and maybe hints of fighting or whatever.

I found the guy who gave me the info on the YR background music composition, and it wasn't the Promo Photo guy that gave me the info after all. But anyway, here's his soundcloud page... he seems to not post the music until after the episode has aired. You can tell by the names of the pieces what scene they may have been used in. soundcloud.com/rc-cates
